Shalini Biswajit is a painter and a sculptor and Director of Forum Art Gallery. She has a master’s degree in Fine Arts from Stella Maris College, Chennai. She passed out with academic proficiency and stood first in the University. Shalini then went on to do a diploma in Interior Design at New York School of Interior Design. It opened a whole new world of challenges and spaces that ultimately lead to the birth of Forum Art Gallery in 1997, a passionate representation of her love for art, space and free spirit.

Shalini has exhibited her works widely in India, and abroad. Shalini has illustrated a children’s book ‘The King and Kiang’ in 2007 for Tulika Publishers, India that is also being published by Oxford University Press, Pakistan.

Her paintings and sculpture can be seen in public collections at Madras Race Club, Madras Club, Savera Hotel, Chennai, Apollo Hospitals Chennai and Bangalore and ABM Amro Bank, Chennai . ‘Aspiration’, Shalini’s sculpture in stainless steel has been commissioned and installed at Kongu Engineering College, Perundurai in 2005. Her sculpture titled Marina Series in mild steel installed on the IT highway has been commissioned by Tamil Nadu Road Development Corporation in 2006.

At Forum Art Gallery, Shalini has curated more than 70 shows from 2002 and takes art closer to people through workshops, art and craft classes, symposiums and art therapy to terminally ill and physically challenged children and adults.

Shalini is a member of FICCI FLO and will take over in April 2011 as Chairperson Chennai Chapter for the year 2011 - 2012.

Shalini was the Charter Chairperson of Ladies Circle 62, the ladies wing of Madras Heritage Round Table 124.Under her leadership, The Circle organized fundraisers and events to support the charities it was involved in. It also won The Most Promising Circle Award in recognition of the service rendered.

Shalini is a member of IWA, International Womans Association and under the portfolios of Art and Culture, Religion and Philosophy and Book Discussion she has organized programs for the association that was much appreciated. She has also been a member of Crafts Council Chennai for the past 25 years.

Shalini has over the years addressed and presented her works to organizations such as IWA, The Duchess Club and the Rotary Club. She has been invited by Pearl Academy of Fashion, Chennai and Stella Maris College as keynote speaker to preside over their events and has also judged various art events including The Hindu Young World Art Competition.

Shalini’s love for nature, exercise and adventure has taken her on several treks in the Himalayan region like, Chomolhari Trek Bhutan, Dzongri - Goechala Trek that takes one closest to the Mt. Kanchenjunga Base Camp, Sikkim, Valley of Flowers Uttaranchal, Silent Valley in South India besides trekking in the Western Ghats. She has recently returned from The Everest Base Camp and Kala Pattar trek in Nepal. That has inspired the Ever at Rest series, She has also summited Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. She is a travel enthusiast and also an avid photographer and has taken several photographs of her travels. Many of her artworks have been evolved from her travels and experiences. Her son Harsha is an artist and daughter Shruti is studying Fashion Design at FIT in NY. Shalini lives with her cartoonist husband Biswajit Balasubramanian in Chennai.
